Reusable Toilet Paper: Pros & Cons

Reusable Toilet Paper: Pros & Cons

When it comes to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint, every little step counts. One of the most innovative steps towards sustainability that has been taken in recent years is the idea of reusable toilet paper.

Sounds bizarre, right? But the concept of reusing instead of disposing of everyday items has taken the world by storm, and toilet paper is no exception. While the idea seems quite eco-friendly, there are a few things you need to know before making the switch.

What Is Reusable Toilet Paper?

Reusable toilet paper is essentially washable cloth squares that you use instead of traditional toilet paper that is typically single-use. While the idea of reusable toilet paper may seem unappealing initially, it has gained immense popularity among those who prioritize sustainability. Let’s take a look at its pros and cons.

Pros:

Eco-Friendly

The most significant benefit of using reusable toilet paper is its positive impact on the environment. It significantly reduces the amount of waste produced, which is a major problem in the world. Disposable toilet paper contributes to the destruction of forests, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. By opting for reusable toilet paper, you can reduce your carbon footprint and help save the planet.

Cost-effective

Reusable toilet paper can save you a considerable amount of money in the long run. Even though cloth wipes cost more initially, they last longer than disposable toilet paper, which means you don’t need to buy them as often. Additionally, you can cut fabric into squares or use old rags or towels, which will save you money as well.

Soft & Comfortable

Compared to disposable toilet paper, which contains chemicals, reusable toilet paper is gentle on your skin. Cloth wipes are made of fabrics like cotton or bamboo, which are naturally soft and absorbent. Moreover, you can use the fabric that you find comfortable, and they get softer with every wash.

Cons:

Unhygienic

Reusable toilet paper, if not appropriately handled, can lead to infections. These wipes need to be washed or soaked in a sanitizing solution before using them again. You will also have to wash them after every use, which can be unhygienic and inconvenient at times.

Takes up Space

Cloth wipes require additional storage space in your bathroom and laundry area. You will need enough room to store clean and dirty wipes separately. This can be challenging, especially if you don’t have a lot of space.

Toilet Zen

Many people associate toilet time with “me time” and use toilet paper as a way to catch up on social media or read a book. This concept could be challenging with reusable toilet paper as it requires a bit more attention and focus. It might not be the most comfortable option for everyone.

Not Travel-Friendly

Reusable toilet paper is not travel-friendly and cannot be used on the go. You would need to carry a separate bag to store it and find a way to wash it during your trip.
